Overdue Book Reviews

This is long overdue. Christian publishers routinely send me their books because this blog gets a great deal of traffic.

Here are some quick reviews on some books that have been given to me awhile back. You can find them all on Amazon.com

MAD CHURCH DISEASE. Anne Jackson (the premier blogger) wrote this one. Gorgeous cover, beautiful lay-out, and well written. It’s sort of an anatomy of church burnout.  There is a religious system, folks. And people routinely get chewed up in it. I think one of the things to keep in mind, however, is that what many people call “church” today has few points of contact with the NT ekklesia. And this compounds the confusion. (See “Why I Love the Church: In Praise of God’s Eternal Purpose.”) It’s also the culprit that creates burnout, which often occurs if one gets involved in “leadership” or “service” in a modern institutional church (I possess hundreds of letters on this score by burnout victims). Anne is an impressive person. Quite talented on many fronts. This book is no exception. 82 reviews on Amazon.com to date — 3 cheers for Anne.  Read ‘em.

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT CHRISTIANITY by Jason T. Berggren. This is a refreshing book in many ways.  What I like most about it is that Jason nails many of the problems that many Christians think, but would never admit. This book tracks with some of the things I’ve written, though I think our solutions may be a bit different at this juncture in life.

OVERCOMING CRISIS by Myles Munroe. I think this is a helpful book for our times with lots of wisdom. If you’re “going through it” right now, read it and let me know if you found it to be of help.

ANCIENT CHRISTIAN COMMENTARY ON SCRIPTURE by IVP – this is a series that uses the church fathers as source material (quotes) on their thoughts on various passages in the Bible. Interesting work, especially if you want to see what Christians over 1,500 years ago said about various biblical texts.

NEW TESTAMENT FOR EVERYONE BIBLE STUDY GUIDES by N.T. Wright – IVP puts these out. For a bible study guide, these are very brief, but good tools to get a group of believers to interact with the NT text.

MAKING ROOM FOR LEADERSHIP by MaryKate Morse. I had the privilege of speaking at an event with MaryKate at George Fox Seminary earlier this year. She’s a delightful person and her book is no exception. Very insightful and unique (her insights into leadership that is). Len Sweet wrote the foreword, which speaks volumes about it’s helpfulness.

What’s Coming …

I’m heading to Nashville very soon for a conference. But I’m going to try to carve out time to blog about “Kingdom Confusion: Part II” this week. If you’ve not yet read Part I, you can check it out here.

Book Review: Two Books by Mark Galli

galli1

galli12

As someone who writes, I read a great deal. I have a library of around 5,000 books (I think). Some of the shelves are earmarked for my favorite authors. There aren’t many of those, as my taste in writing is pretty narrow.

It’s hard to come across a contemporary author who can write in a way that mixes ease-of-reading with depth and unusual insight into Jesus Christ and His church. So it seems to me anyway.

Every now and then, however, I’ll stumble across an author who has been writing books for a long time, but I’ve never read their work. And when I read them, I’m pleasantly shocked.

Leonard Sweet is one of those people. For many years, I heard his name — reading it in many periodicals and journals. But I never tackled one of his books until a few years ago. And in them I found a gold mine. I now have a Len Sweet bookshelf.

For many years I read the name “Mark Galli.” Probably because I’ve been a subscriber of Christianity Today for many years. I’ve also seen his name in history journals.

Not too long ago, one of the articles in CT caught my attention; it was an excerpt from a new book of Mark’s. It talked about the right hand and the left hand of God. I enjoyed the metaphor (the “left hand of God” was new to me).

Well, I just read his new book where that article was hewn from, and the volume that released previous to it.

Mark is a clear and easy-to-follow writer. But the thought that ran through my head while reading was, “Why haven’t I read this guy before?”

Both books are superb.

The first one is called JESUS MEAN AND WILD. http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Mean-Wild-Unexpected-Untamable/dp/0801071577/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b

The second one (which was the basis for the article I mentioned above), with matching cover and page format, is called A GREAT AND TERRIBLE LOVE. http://www.amazon.com/Great-Terrible-Love-Spiritual-Attributes/dp/0801012953/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1249131502&sr=1-1

In both books, Mark draws from some of my favorite writers: Bonheoffer, Chesterton, Tozer, Kierkegaard, Ladd, Wright, Augustine, and many others.

In A GREAT AND TERRIBLE LOVE, Mark examines God’s attributes. I don’t know about you, but for me, every time I’ve read through one of those “Divine Attributes” lists, I find myself yawning.

Mark’s book is different. It brings each of God’s attributes to life. It also adds texture and insight to them.

My two favorite chapters were “The Everlasting Now” (Eternity) and “Life That Bubbles Over” (Trinity). “The Elusive Lover” (Mystery)  is excellent too.

These three aspects of God’s nature are very dear to my own heart. For that reason, I’ve written extensively on them myself. I’ve often said that the Trinity is the model for the ekklesia (John 17, etc.). God’s timeless purpose, conceived in eternity past, was to expand the fellowship of the Godhead, and that’s what the church is, in effect. And the love affair that we can have with the Lord is one that is both glorious and mysterious at the same time, and He in fact is an elusive Lover.

In JESUS MEAN AND WILD, Mark brings out the confrontational, bold side of Jesus Christ over/against the “warm, cuddly, passive” Jesus that some Christians have in mind. Yes, Jesus is the Lamb of God, but He’s also the Lion of Judah.

I appreciated many of the insights in the book, especially Mark’s take on “success” and “size” when it comes to local churches. MEAN AND WILD is a clarion call to get to know the real Christ in all of His multisplendored attributes. Especially those that may not sit comfortable with us.

All told: I commend Mark Galli’s two books to you. And I will be on the look-out for his next work.

Thoughts on our Last Poll & Book Review “Busted: Exposing Popular Myths about Christianity”

Thanks to all who posted on our last blog post. Your answers were very helpful. They’ve given us a lot to think over.

Three quick things on that score.

1. All of my books are now available on Kindle, excepting “From Eternity to Here.” But that one is supposed to be on Kindle soon.

2. For those of you who live outside the USA, you can order our books from any country at a big discount at www.FromEternitytoHere.org – shipping is standard prices, but with the low costs of the books, it helps make up for it.

3. Someone asked me to list the top 7 most downloaded mp3s that we’ve made freely available on our webpage (www.ptmin.org) thus far. So if you’re an iPod/mp3 kind of person, here they are: (they are all on iTunes also)

#1. Steve Brown interview clip

#2. Message delivered at George Fox Seminary w/ questions from Len Sweet, Dan Kimball, et. al

#3. Chapter 1 of “From Eternity to Here”

#4. Message delivered at a conference following Paul Young (“The Shack”)

#5. Interview with George Barna

#6. A “straight talk” message to the House Church Movement

#7. The hot-boiling phone call I received from a caller the one and only time I played “Talk Radio Show” host (comedy)

BOOK REVIEW – “BUSTED: Exposing Popular Myths about Christianity”

—-

There are many Christian apologetic books in print today. Some are good. Others are fair to middle cloudy. But some simply “shred” the false claims against the reality of Jesus Christ and leave virtually nothing left except scraps of fragmented paper.

For example:

F.F. Bruce shredded the modern claims against the reliability of the New Testament in his classic book, The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?

C.S. Lewis in his well-known treatise Mere Christianity shredded the logical (so called) arguments of his day against the Lord Jesus Christ.

N.T. Wright in his Simply Christian shreds many postmodern arguments against the faith.

The new Zondervan book, BUSTED: Exposing Popular Myths about  Christianity, fits nicely into the above.

Popular myths like ….

You can’t trust the Bible; it’s been translated too many times.
Jesus never claimed to be the Messiah or God.

Jesus didn’t rise from the dead.

The Trinity was invented by religious people in the 4th century.

Science has proven that miracles don’t happen (so the Bible is a fairytale).

Christianity is anti-semitic

All religions basically teach the same thing (so all paths lead to God), and much more ….

are all addressed and taken to task.

Author Fred Von Kamecke puts these “myths” into the shredder and turns it on high.

What I like about the book is that it’s written at a very popular level. A high school student can read it with interest, “get” the arguments, and be compelled by them. For the more scholarly person, there are recommended books at the end of each chapter which are more academic. If you are familiar with Christian apologetics, you probably won’t find anything in the book that’s new or earth-shattering in the way of insight or information, but it does a nice job at handling all of these questions in a popular, thoughtful, compelling way.

If you know people who have bought into one of the many insipid, ignorant-based arguments against the Christian faith, hand them a copy of BUSTED.

It’s a great dialogue starter.

Neue – The Quartely Digest

I just received Issue 3 of “Neue” … the new Christian digest.

Boy, am I impressed.

I thought this would be a magazine. It’s not. It’s a digest. Over 200 pages. And full color with awesome graphics and images.

Editor Jeff Goins interviewed me in this edition. Love the formatting they used for it.

Lots of other neat articles and interviews: Dallas Willard, Tom Sine, Francis Chan, etc.

I’m quite impressed with it.

In the next issue, they’ll be running an article I wrote that compares the organic church with the organized church. And yes, those terms are defined in the piece :-)

The First Chapter of “From Eternity to Here” – Audio – under 8 minutes. Feel free to pass on or post on your blog. You can also download it from iTunes. Just look for my name in the iTunes store.

Btw/ I just bought an iPhone. Looking forward to figuring it out.

Review of “Angels and Demons” (the New Film) & Family Christian Store Announcement

Destiny Image (the publisher of The Untold Story of the New Testament Church) asked me to watch and review the new film ANGELS AND DEMONS, featuring Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor, Ayelet Zurer, et al.

They published the review here. They are also making the book available at a 50% discount, which surprised me.

Incidentally, I want to thank all of you who picked up a copy of “From Eternity to Here” … the book hit the CBA Bestseller List last month. We were quite shocked at this. It made the top 50, coming in a #16 in “Christian Living.”  So thank you again! This just helps to spread the amazing message of God’s Eternal Purpose. Also, if there’s a Family Christian Store near you, the book will be displayed this coming week (beginning tomorrow) on the “New Voices” Endcap section. Hopefully at a discount.

Three Books Recommended

I’m recommending three books this month.

The first is THE RABBIT AND THE ELEPHANT by my dear friends Tony and Felicity Dale. It’s an informative book that discusses the simple church movement. The Dales are asking everyone to buy a copy from Amazon.com on June 3rd, as this will help the book get more attention. The Amazon link for the book is below.

Order here: http://www.amazon.com/Rabbit-Elephant-Small-Todays-Church/dp/1414325533/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237494532&sr=1-1

The second is written by my friend and coworker Milt Rodriguez: THE BUTTERFULY IN YOU. A beautiful book on spiritual formation and the inner-workings of how authentic discipleship takes place. Milt touches on elements that are little discussed today in most of the present-day conversations about discipleship. My good friend Marietta Welter, who went to be with the Lord recently, did the artwork for the cover.

Order here: http://therebuilders.org/butterinyou-book.html

The third book is called CREATING COMMUNITIES OF THE KINDGOM. This is an important book on church planting, but it’s little known today. If you are someone who is interested in church planting, you’ll want a copy on your bookshelf.

Order here: http://www.amazon.com/Creating-Communities-Kingdom-Testament-Planting/dp/0836134702/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243694256&sr=1-1
