Joanne,

God bless you with your new blog. May it be like having good church. (a good assembly of people who honor God in what they do and say, each being connected
by the same spirit that is in Christ Jesus, etc.)

Tom,

I find in my dictionary that the word church can mean lots of different things, some
of which you mention. We do need to watch how we use words as much as watch
how others are using them.

I continue to value the insights I have found in the books God inspired you to write. There are not many people in my "circle" to talk with about these books.

I am still looking for a forum that would invite the kind of interactive talking I am hoping to find -- where scripture, probing questions, and the freedom to explore every perspective is encouraged.

In the meantime I started a blog of my own and am hoping the Lord will draw others to it who are willing to pioneer outside the confines of the safe, institutional church, walls.

Thank you to you for your willingness to be a pioneer in the Lord, facing, I am sure, many of the same kinds of responses the original apostles met with.

The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ to you

I enjoyed this article. I have to say that I agree with nearly 100% of what you say.

However I've got to say that for several reasons I personally would like to start a revolt against the use of the word "church."

Number one being I learned from you in Pagan Christianity the word church is actually a translation of the word kyriakon which has the opposite meaning of the word Ecclesia which the word church replaces in English translations.

Secondly, because of my 31 years of experience in churches and and those of many others experience. I use the same definition for the word church as a do the word religion. "A obligation management system driven by fear and shame.

Thirdly, because even though many churches, colleges and seminaries use the correct definition for the word ecclesia as the definition of the word church. Churches have functioned the same as the definition of the word kyriakon. I hope I said that in a way that makes sense.

Lastly, because my experience in churches both as a member of un-bliblical clergy and laity causes me to feel repulsed and want nothing to do with anything that calls itself church. From my contact with others I'm confident I'm not the only one that has a similar response. Where as the word Ecclesia exhilarates and represents something I want to be part of as I was some 25 years ago.

As an avid reader of Alan's blog, I thought this was a great discussion. I enjoyed the dialogue.
