Some of My Favorite Films

While at a conference last year, someone asked me over lunch, “So what do you do to relax?” I quickly answered, “I watch movies.”

I’ve never been much of a television fan. Most of the popular shows that are on now, I’ve never seen. Not even one episode. That includes Lost, American Idol, The Office, Dancing with the Stars, 24, etc. The only television programs I’ve watched faithfully (in my adult years) have been Seinfeld, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, and Nightline (with Ted Koppel – the greatest interviewer in history, bar none).

Other than that, the only time I watch television is if the Yankees or Mets are in the World Series (I was euphoric in 2000 when they played against each other in the Series – ‘twas a dream come true). I also watch news programs on a fairly regular basis.

Warning: If you’re a male over 60 years old, please sit down. Now hold on to both sides of your chair real tightly. Okay, are you holding tight?

[Cough], unlike most humans with a Y chromosome, I don’t watch Football, Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Volleyball, ESPN, Boxing, Tennis, Badmiton, or Baseball (unless the Word Series is featuring the Yanks or the Mets).

Other than that, I watch movies pretty regularly. I typically watch them on DVD or video so that I can fast-forward through anything I don’t like or rewind to anything I do like. (I find myself hitting FF on many movies by the way.)

What follows are some of my favorite films:

Romance – my favorite type.

  1. Message in a Bottle (though I hated the end)
  2. The Cutting Edge (the original 1992 film, not the cheesy remakes.)
  3. Bed of Roses (I love the end)
  4. Don’t Tell Her It’s Me
  5. A Walk in the Clouds

Comedy

  1. Meet the Parents
  2. Airplane
  3. Mr. Deeds
  4. Shallow Hal
  5. Never Been Kissed
  6. Anger Management
  7. Ground Hog Day

Action

  1. The Bourne Identity trilogy
  2. The Matrix (the first one)
  3. The Dirty Harry films (Clint Eastwood)
  4. Rocky
  5. Sneakers
  6. Die Hard (only because I am Bruce’s stunt-double)

Drama/Suspense – too many to list. This is my favorite type of film after Romance. I enjoy most films with Denzel Washington in them. Déjà vu was among his best, I think. A brilliant movie.

Horror – don’t watch it.

I also don’t care for films in the spirit of Fried Green Tomatoes, Little Women, Terms of Endearment, and Steel Magnolias – what some people call “chick-flicks.” (Umm … romance does not fit into this category, Sir.)

In a future blog, I’ll share some of how I’ve seen something of the Lord through various films.

Disclaimer: For those of you who may be troubled by this blog post, just because I may like a movie doesn’t mean that I endorse everything in it. I rarely do.

Incidentally, I’m not sure if anyone else is like me in this particular regard. So far, I’ve only met one person who was. Most people I know are the opposite. But when it comes to books, I have the hardest time reading fiction. I mean a really, really, really hard time. I much prefer non-fiction books. However, when it comes to movies, I much prefer to watch fiction films over against documentaries and “based on a true story” movies.

It’s just the way my brain is hard-wired I guess.

On a completely different subject, our humble little blog here received a record 772 views yesterday. Not sure why the huge spike; maybe some bored soul spent the day hitting the refresh button repeatedly J

Be sure to check back tomorrow.
